A Determined Woman

About seven years ago and newly widowed, Alicia took the job of president of the bankrupted La Union Coffee Cooperativa. The cooperative has struggled through some adversity - a 10 year civil war, Hurricane Mitch, and the recent earthquakes. In seven years, she has grown the cooperative from 18 farmers to 60, six of whom are widows. La Union Cooperative has received certification from The Rainforest Alliance, and their coffee is now certified organic. Alicia has educated herself on every aspect of the coffee production. She even insists that farmers bring their wives to meetings to learn the coffee business!
